In Ayurveda, Bibhitaki belongs to three groups of herbs: Jwarahara, herbs used to treat fever; Kasahara, herbs used to treat cold and cough; and Virechanopaga, herbs used in Panchakarma detoxification. Bibhitaki brings a mild laxative action to the classic Triphala formulation, and is said to balance the Kapha and Vata doshas. The fruit is also believed to alleviate stress and anxiety — studies show that biocomponents of the fruit may have anti-depressant characteristics.
Bibhitaki is also commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to help treat diabetes and blood sugar levels. This is because Bibhitaki is high in gallic acid and ellagic acid, two phytochemicals that have beneficial effects on blood sugar levels, insulin sensitivity and body weight.
