-
Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha may act as a pain reliever, preventing pain signals from traveling along the central nervous system. It may also have some anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, some research has shown it to be effective in treating forms of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis.
-
Ginger: Research has found that ginger essential oil had a protective effect on the kidneys. Ginger oil was found to be anti-inflammatory, preventing changes in kidney function markers or molecules associated with inflammation.
-
Vetiver: Since the oil is known for its soothing and cooling effects, it helps calm all sorts of inflammation. It is specifically good at delivering relief from inflammation in both the circulatory and nervous system. It is also considered an appropriate treatment for the inflammation caused by sun stroke and dehydrated skin.
-
Black Pepper: Like many oils, black pepper essential oil has warming, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties. This can help reduce pain from tired or injured muscles. It eases cramps, improves tendonitis as well as relieves symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism. This is because the warming effect improves your blood circulation.
-
Peppermint: Wintergreen oil and menthol have been used to treat pain from tension headaches, migraine headaches, and other causes. One small study looked at the topical application of a 10 percent menthol solution for migraine treatment. They found that when applied to the forehead and temples, participants had a longer duration of pain relief and less nausea and light sensitivity compared to the placebo.
-
Rosemary: In folk medicine, rosemary is utilized as a mild pain reliever. In a two-week study, stroke survivors with shoulder pain who received a rosemary oil blend with acupressure for 20 minutes twice daily experienced a 30% reduction in pain. Those who received only acupressure had a 15% reduction in pain. Additionally, another study determined that rosemary oil was slightly more effective for pain than acetaminophen, a common over-the-counter pain medication.
-
Lavender: Since lavender carries anti-inflammatory and relaxation properties, it is commonly used to relieve pain in the joints and muscles. As one of the essential oils known to help reduce pain, lavender essential oil aromatherapy can help soothe the pain from headaches. Lavender oil inhalation can also help reduce the pain caused by migraines. It’s a safe and natural alternative to taking painkillers.
-
Turmeric: Recent studies show turmeric helps prevent and reduce joint inflammation. This reduces pain, stiffness, and inflammation related to arthritis. Research has shown that curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory and can actually fight inflammation at the molecular level. Curcumin blocks the molecule NF-kB responsible for activating genes in cells nuclei that trigger inflammation. In fact studies have described its potency to be as effective as anti-inflammatory drugs - without the unpleasant side effects.
